Girl, what were YOU thinking: My natural hair journey.

Hi ladies!

How long have YOU been natural? Are transitioning or thinking of going natural? If so, I’m going to give you some tips and tricks on ways you can rock your natural hair. I, myself have been natural for almost 3 years (July 25) to be exact. Let me tell you, it isn’t easy. It’s a lot of work you have to put into your hair, but I can say it’s worth it.

My experience:
When I first went natural, I transitioned for a few months, lets sayyyy about 5-6 months, I usually wore braids or sew ins during this time period until one day I just couldn’t take it anymore. I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU NOT TO DO THIS what i’m about to tell you! I lied to my mom and told her I was getting my hair cut into a cute bob style, right? Only did she knew, I was actually getting my relaxed ends cut off. So, I went to my hairstylist and got my hair cut. Now, ofcourse, this was so new to me I didn’t know how to feel about my hair. A part of me felt relieved that this was a new start for me and plus, I wanted a new look and then another part of me wanted to scream at myself like WTF did I do to my hair. I cried. I cried like a baby. I’m not going to lie because I’m like what is my mother going to think? I was so scared to even go home!
Long story short, she didn’t like it. It took her a while to get used to my natural hair. But, During this time period, I would wear weave or braids and my hair was growing SOO fast. It was like a dream come true to her. But, what I can say about this journey is that I learned to love myself. Even though, people in highschool were calling me names. These are the same people that are saying  how they love my hair now and how they can’t wait for their hair to be like mines. LOL. I KNOW RIGHT.

How long have you been natural? Are you transitioning? What made YOU go natural? What were your experiences?

Here are some few pictures of my natural hair progress over the years!

  1. Hi! Thanks for sharing your natural hair journey! I have been natural for about 5 years and have done 3 big chops. Each time I learned more about caring for my natural hair texture. It is definitely more work but it is liberating to say the least and when I rock my natural hairstyles I feel beautiful. Man, I look back at my relaxed days and my hair was thin and sickly. My husband encouraged me to go natural. He has always loved me in my most natural state! Hoping women continue to embrace their natural beauty 🙂

    1. Hey, No problem! I do hope women gain the confidence to rock their natural hair texture! I’m still learning about my texture, even though it does get difficult and sometimes I even discourage myself but I’m going to continue to embrace my curls!

  2. I went natural almost 3 years ago. I actually looked at pictures from after my big chop recently and I’m amazed and happy I made the decision! I started off transitioning but then the permed hair was starting to get too tangled for me so i just had my sister chop it up. Ever since I started this journey Ive started experimenting more with different hair styles, and braids and all that. I love it!
